While preparing to leave Australia. I would like to reflect on my trip this season. I dedicate this post to the quirky terms I have heard over my months stay. I pride myself in speaking both American English and Australian English they are that different sometimes.
Bathers : swimsuit
Bloke : guy
Bloody oath! : that’s true
Bludger : lazy person
Bottle shop : liquor shop
Boot : trunk of the car
Bonnet : hood of the car
Brekkie : breakfast
Buck’s night : bachelors party
Chewie : chewing gum
Chrissie : Christmas
Cozzie : swimming costume
Dag : a funny person
Dickhead : idiot
Dipstick : a loser, idiot
Fringe : bangs
Flatmate : roommate
Grog : liquor, beer
Heaps : a lot, example “thanks heaps”
Lollies : candy
Mate : friend
Mozzie : mosquito
Scrubber : trashy, rough person
See ya’s : bye
She’ll be right : it’ll turn out okay
Sickie : day off sick from work (chuck a sickie = call into work when you’re not sick!)
Spewin’ : very angry
Truckie : truck driver
Unit : flat, apartment
Up oneself : to be cocky - “he’s really up himself”
Whacker, whacka : idiot
Whinge : complain
